Union Picks: IBEW Local 1547, IUOE Local 302, ASEA/AFSCME Local 52, And Teamsters Local 959 Announce Alaska 2012 Legislative Candidate Endorsements

Update November 5th: Found endorsements from the IUOE Local 302, added them throughout the post. Have also found endorsements from ASEA/AFSCME Local 52. Post title changed to reflect this addition.

Want to know which Alaska legislative candidates are the favorites of organized labor during this election cycle? The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1547 has awarded their endorsements for Alaska legislative candidates in the November 2012 election. They can be viewed HERE with a Microsoft Word-compatible viewer. In some districts, IBEW did not award an endorsement, particularly where a candidate is unopposed.

Teamsters Local 959 has also awarded endorsements, available HERE. In some districts, the Teamsters decided either candidate would be equally acceptable, and so they awarded dual endorsements.

The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 302 has also awarded their endorsements, published on page 35 of their fourth quarter 2012 edition of Loadline. Their selections are embedded throughout the candidate list, and the raw list is also cross-posted towards the end of this post.

The Alaska State Employees Association (ASEA/AFSCME Local 52): has also awarded their own endorsements, available HERE.

The Party Scorecard:

-- IBEW: Endorsed 31 Democrats, 3 Republicans, and 1 Independent. Republican numbers lowered in part by the fact that the IBEW did not award endorsements to unopposed candidates; several Republicans are running unopposed.
-- Teamsters: Endorsed 26 Democrats, 18 Republicans, and 1 Independent. Republican numbers greater in part because they awarded endorsements in most unopposed races and dual endorsements in some. The Teamsters also historically tend to be more receptive to Republicans than most unions.
-- IUOE: Endorsed 21 Democrats, 7 Republicans, and 1 Independent. To their credit, the IUOE is outspoken in their opposition to environmental extremists.
-- ASEA/AFSCME Local 52: Endorsed 35 Democrats, 10 Republicans, and 1 Independent.

Candidates who receive union endorsements are not necessarily union "stooges". One must look at the candidate's total package, and in the case of incumbents, the voting record. Republicans who obtain union endorsements tend to be left-of-center; hard-right Republicans received no endorsements from either of these unions. These endorsements should be cross-referenced with Prosperity Alaska endorsements to determine how well a candidate balances business and labor interests.
