On May 25th, 2012, the date for the federal trial of Israel Keyes was set for March 11th, 2013 by U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Burgess. Originally charged for access device fraud, Keyes will also stand trial for kidnapping resulting in death, receipt and possession of ransom money. He pleaded not guilty on all counts back on April 19th.

The hearing took place under heavy security since on Wednesday May 23rd, Keyes broke through his steel chain leg irons, leaped over the railing, and vaulted into the second row of the gallery, heading in the direction of the courtroom door until at least six people wrestled him to the ground. He was then tasered and handcuffed and the room was cleared. The U.S. Marshals Service is investigating how Keyes could have broken loose; Supervisory Deputy David Long said "I’ve done this 20 years, I’ve never seen anybody pull that loose like that, no.” To prevent a recurrence, Keyes was handcuffed to a desk and surrounded by four U.S. Marshals, with additional plainclothes law enforcement personnel. Judge Burgess warned Keyes that future outbursts could result in him being found in contempt of court, gagged or removed from the court entirely to watch the trial from a jail cell. Keyes was also dressed in a red jumpsuit instead of an orange jumpsuit to signify that he is more dangerous. The gallery contained a large contingent of Samantha Koenig's friends and family, including her father James Koenig and mother Darlene Christiansen.

Both sides initially proposed different trial dates. The defense team of three lawyers, led by public defender Rich Curtner, earlier stated they wanted a trial date around 24 months down the road because of the complexity of the case and the possibility of the death penalty being pursued. However, assistant U.S. attorney Frank Russo, citing the Victims’ Rights Act as conferring the right to a speedier trial, said the government could be prepared to move forward sooner than 10 months. The judge veered towards Russo's proposal and set the date for March 11th, 2013.

I'd say Israel Keyes undermined his not guilty plea by his escape attempt.
