Former Ketchikan Mayor Jack Shay Pleads Guilty To Seven Counts Possession Of Child Porn, Sentenced To 17 Years In Prison

John W. "Jack" Shay, a former mayor and city councilman in Ketchikan, Alaska who was arrested on November 4th, 2011 and ultimately charged with 91 counts of possession of child porn, reached a plea agreement with prosecutors on April 30th, 2012. KRBD-FM reports that Shay pleaded guilty to seven counts of possession of child porn, and in return, the state will drop the remaining 84 counts.

However, Shay will pay a stiff price for those seven counts. When Shay is formally sentenced on August 3rd, he will receive 35 years in prison with 18 years suspended and 17 years to serve. It could have been worse; each count carries a maximum sentence of 99 years in prison, although the presumptive sentence for a first-time felon is two to 12 years for each count. Even if he ultimately gets paroled for good behavior, the 80-year-old Shay will be in his 90s by the time he's released, assuming he even survives the sentence.

Update August 22nd: On August 20th, Shay was sentenced to to 35 years with 18 suspended for seven counts of possessing child pornography. With good behavior, he could be out in 12 years. Title Of post changed slightly to reflect this development.

Shay, who was a member of the Ketchikan City Council at the time, was originally arrested on November 4th after workers at a local computer repair shop discovered child porn images on a computer Shay brought in for repair and then notified police. He was initially charged with 10 counts and released on $30,000 bail. But after a search of Shay's house revealed more images, to include homemade videos "starring" Shay, he was then charged with a total of 91 counts, and his bail was upped to $100,000 with a third-party custodian requirement. Shay resigned from the city council on November 7th.

What a terrible way to close out one's life.
