According to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, an unidentified man broke into the home of an unidentified woman in the Monroe Subdivison near Minnie Street around 3:30 A.M. on February 12th. The woman was in her bedroom when the man started trying to get through her locked bedroom door. As he was trying to get into the bedroom, the woman called a friend and told the friend to call 911. The woman yelled several times for the man to get back and stop, but as he broke through her door, she swung the sword, described as two feet long with a bamboo handle. The man immediately retreated to another room in the house, where he was found by police sitting on an exercise bike with his left hand barely hanging on and bleeding steadily from his injury.
The man, who appeared to be in shock, was put into restraints and officers immediately called EMTs. He was subsequently transported to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for treatment. His condition and if his hand was successfully reattached is unknown at present. Police believe the perpetrator has diminished mental capacities, and believe the woman was legitimately defending herself. Nonetheless, the district attorney will investigate further.
Reaction: Comments indicate almost universal support for the woman, although some express concern that the man might try to target the woman with a civil suit in the future. One person offered some additional information:

For those of you who are wondering why she called her friend and not the cops, it is because this friend of hers lives with her, her friend lives upstairs while she lives downstairs. She called her friend so 1.)she knew that there was someone in the house, 2.) She was very occupied with the person who's hand she almost cut off.
I'm so glad that she wasn't hurt. I also hope that he doesn't go after her, she was just defending herself. She shouldn't have to lose anything.
Of course, there is still one Alaskan girl who "kicks more ass" than anyone else:
