Indiana Republican Congressman Mike Pence Introduces H.R.217, The Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, To Cut Off Funding To Planned Parenthood

Update January 11th: Have now posted better links to the specific legislation.

It looks like Planned Parenthood may eventually stand to pay a stiff price for having waged judicial warfare against the people of Alaska by working to overturn the parental notification initiative passed by a majority of voters in August 2010. Congressman Mike Pence (R-Indiana) has introduced a bill that would effectively defund Planned Parenthood.

The bill, entitled the "Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act", is designated H.R.217, and you will be able to read the full text HERE. As of this post, there are 121 co-sponsors. Unfortunately, our very own Congressman Don Young is not yet listed among the co-sponsors, although Congressman Young is conditionally pro-life. The bill was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on January 7th, 2011. Video of introduction speech embedded below:

While Planned Parenthood is the primary target, the bill is generic. On his official U.S. House website, Congressman Pence explains the background of the bill:

The Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act would not reduce the total amount of funds available for family planning; it would simply block funding to organizations that perform abortions. Title X is the only federal grant program dedicated solely to providing comprehensive family planning and related preventative health services, and there are a number of federally funded clinics across the nation that offer beneficial services including patient counseling, breast cancer screenings, HIV prevention education and more.

Last year alone [2010], according to Planned Parenthood’s own annual report, it received more than $363 million in revenue from government grants and contracts. During that same time frame, they performed an unprecedented 324,008 abortions, a 5.8 percent increase from the previous year. The nation’s largest abortion provider is also under investigation in multiple states including Indiana, California, Alabama and Tennessee for allegations of fraudulent use of Title X funding.

Planned Parenthood has not yet published an official response to this development. However, their pro-choice propaganda is so insidious and seductive that they successfully brainwashed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who visited their clinic in Seattle. The LDS Church officially accepts therapeutic, or medically-necessary abortions. In a New York Times piece entitled "Single, Female, Mormon, Alone", Nicole Hardy wrote:

Oddly, my trip to Planned Parenthood provided much that the church had not in recent years. During my exam, the clinician explained every move before she made it, asked permission to touch me during the most routine procedures. I was mystified: by her compassion, by the level of attention paid to my body — as if it were fragile, or sacred. Only then did it occur to me how many terrified and abused women Planned Parenthood must treat every day.

And that brought me to tears, sorrowful for the ways in which we all suffer, in whatever ways we do, and grateful for the unlikely refuge of this place. Grateful also for the safety granted my own tears, prompted by the delicate weight of a hand on my shoulder, the warmth of her palm against my back.

How unprepared I was to experience tenderness in the place I had been warned so vehemently against. How unprepared for the flood of relief, the bud of hope, after a life devoted to keeping myself separate from my body. Here was a path, an opening; here was empathy.

I would have an IUD instead of children; I would have intellectual and spiritual freedom...

O.K., she went there to get an IUD. No problem. But Planned Parenthood uses the same type of seductive propaganda to normalize abortion...in particular, elective abortion, which is generally defined as for reasons other than life, health, rape, and incest. And it is for this reason, as well as their constant judicial campaigns to overturn the people's expressed will against the excesses of abortion, that Rep. Pence's legislation is justified. A former Planned Parenthood worker, Abby Johnson, has just released a book entitled "Unplanned", in which she unmasks the real Planned Parenthood behind the scenes. The fact that Rep. Pence has already obtained the co-sponsorship of 121 of the 435 House members is merely the icing on the cake.

  2. An individual cannot be considered to be starving if his weight remains constant or increases. A group cannot be considered to be starving, even if individual members are, if its total mass increases. There might be some starving blacks in certain areas of Africa, but totaled, blacks are not starving there since their numbers continue to increase. Those who supply most of the food -- white folks -- want blacks to increase in number. Why? As with the Chinese, what an opportunity to sell bicycles, radios and other "conveniences". Here again, we are saddled with the nemesis of "more". The American Dream is nothing more than the enigmatic wish for all that one can imagine. More chrome goodies, more sex, more money! If fact, progress is defined by the measure one succeeds to gathering up "more".
