Anchorage Daily News Editor Matt Zencey Gets Suckered By Obvious Hoax Hate Letter Sent By Alleged Homeschooler

While it is well-known that the Anchorage Daily News editorially tacks to the left-of-center, normally they keep their political orientation within reasonable bounds. But on October 28th, 2009, editor Matt Zencey gave full reign to his bias against homeschooling, discussing an unsigned "hate" letter received from someone who identifies with homeschooling.

The problem is that the letter is an obvious hoax, a false flag op designed to discredit the homeschooling community.

In this Alaska Notebook column, Zencey states he received an unsigned letter with no return address that contained two photocopied cut-and-paste missives. The top half featured a caricature of Barack Obama, criticizing the president's economic stimulus and using the N-word to describe him. The bottom half included the phrase "Thank you Mat-Su Correspondence Study School for paying for our private Christian School's extra activities."

But what's really disturbing is that an otherwise respected editor of Alaska's largest newspaper decided to take this letter at face value, without offering any supporting evidence as to why we should take it seriously. He concludes his column by writing "I shudder to think about the lessons being taught to the children in that particular parent's home school". While it is not impossible that some loony within the homeschooling community may have authored it, the amateurish description proffered makes it far more likely that this is a false flag op mounted by someone who wants to discredit the homeschooling movement. Homeschoolers in Alaska have come under recent scrutiny because Alaska has the most "lax" homeschooling laws in the nation and critics are concerned about accountability, and perhaps one critic decided to hit below the belt. In particular, progressives have an odious reputation for making it up as they go; it was The Immoral Minority progressive blogger who regurgitated the lies about Trig Palin's parentage and made up a cock-and-bull story about a "Palin divorce".

Unless Matt Zencey could provide credible evidence that this letter was from an actual homeschooler, he should not have even wasted any column space on it. By thoughtlessly shooting from the hip, he has bruised the reputation of the Anchorage Daily News.
