Ray Ward Becomes The First African-American To File An Ethics Complaint Against Sarah Palin, Complaint Dismissed Only Six Days Later

Update July 15th: Complaint dismissed July 15th. Post title changed to reflect this development. New information posted in green towards the bottom of the post.

It looks like a representative of one of Anchorage's minority communities wanted to get a piece of the ethics action. On July 9th, 2009, Ray Ward became the first African-American to file an ethics complaint against Governor Sarah Palin. According to KTVA Channel 11, Ward claims Palin has been paid for radio and television interviews dating back to just after she lost her vice-presidential bid. They report that it's the 18th ethics complaint filed against Palin. In response, Palin's attorney, Thomas Van Flein, initially said the allegations are "categorically false," and says it fits a pattern of harassing and false ethics complaints. Governor Palin responded as follows:

“The only saving grace in this recent episode is that it proves beyond any doubt the significance of the problem Alaska faces in the ‘new normal’ of political discourse. I hope this will be a wake-up call – to legislators, to commentators and to citizens generally – that we need a much more civil and respectful dialogue that focuses on the best interests of the state, rather than the petty resentments of a few.”

Thomas Van Flein's full statement is now available HERE. He states that Governor Palin has never been paid an appearance fee or received other remuneration from any “television or radio” show. She has not been paid for any media interview. Van Flein also reveals that Ward has a record in the Alaska court system involving the collection of criminal and civil matters, including possible allegations of: filing a false report, illegal use of the telephone, criminal trespass, domestic violence, vehicle tampering, and DUI. Ward’s attorney in some of those past cases was Rex Butler.

Conservatives4Palin also weighed in and found an article in the Anchorage Press (includes a photo of Ward) which describes how Ward once sued singer James Brown, who he also happens to impersonate. Actually, Brown goes far beyond impersonation; he's actually set up a shrine to the King of Soul in his home located at 1927 Norene Street, which is open to the public every Sunday from 5-7 P.M. Unlike the 25 ornate multimillion dollar Holocaust temples scattered all over the country, Ward's abode is modest as museums go, but pretty large for a fan-shrine.

This complaint is likely to be dismissed in record time. And indeed it was. On July 15th, the Alaska Personnel Board rejected the complaint in part because it was not properly notarized. In addition, Personnel Board Chairman Debra English said the board had already determined media interviews did not violate the Ethics Act. Ward lacked evidence to support his allegation that the governor received any payment for media interviews. Hat tip to Conservatives4Palin for reporting the rejection; no media outlets saw fit to report it.

  1. The only reason to file an ethics complaint was to be the first non-white?

    Well, that has been accomplished.

I'm not sure Mr. Ward wants to be in the same crowd as the whites who filed.

    Have a good life.

    1. Should we really take seriously an ethics complaint filed by a James Brown impersonator? Last I heard, he was living in Seattle, WA, going around saying his name was James Brown, and has performed 'on stage' with the Rolling Stones, Whitney Houston AND for the Queen of England! No surprise that the complaint was dismissed.

  2. My post was intended to be parody of diversity as well as a report on the latest ethics complaint. I guess maybe I made the parody a bit too subtle.

  3. Thanks for the clarification!

The complaint made little sense, unless your theory was, in fact, true.

There are days when subtlety is just too subtle.
