Petition Campaign Launched To Fire David Letterman Over Sexually Suggestive Remarks He Made About Sarah Palin's 14-Year-Old Daughter Willow

Update June 16th: David Letterman has issued a more substantive apology, and Governor Palin has accepted it. Petition campaign identified in this post has fulfilled its purpose. Updated post HERE.

I hadn't intended to take an interest in this story, but it seems to have gone viral, and there's now a petition campaign in the works. So it represents another welcome opportunity to take a well-deserved shot at the mass media and the entertainment business which drags us down to the lowest common denominator in the 'Kwa.

Apparently the so-called "comedian" David Letterman has become a dirty old man in his sunset years. Cyberspace is now ablaze with fury over some sexually-suggestive remarks he made about 14-year-old Willow Palin, one of Governor Sarah Palin's daughters. The fury has produced an online petition campaign appealing to CBS to fire David Letterman. The goal is to get 3,000 signatures.

Read and sign the petition HERE.

What triggered the outrage? On Monday June 8th, during his monologue, Letterman cracked, "During the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez". Perhaps the 18-year-old Bristol Palin was his intended foil, small problem. It wasn't Bristol at the game. It was 14-year-old Willow Palin. Oops! Here's a YouTube video found on Conservatives4Palin, with the offending clip at the very beginning:

Also note that the video provided a side-by-side comparison with Don Imus' reference to "nappy-headed hoes". Imus was eventually fired by CBS media moguls Les Moonves and Murray Rothstein (aka Sumner Redstone). Yet CBS has taken no action against Letterman for this incident - not even a suspension. Would CBS have kept their hands off if Willow Palin was Black or Latino? I doubt it - we all know there's a double standard in the 'Kwa.

But condemnation from other sources has been widespread. And not just from the usual suspects - even the National Organization for Women (NOW) issued a statement criticizing Letterman for promoting the sexualization of young women.

David Letterman has issued a backhanded apology of sorts. He said his joke was about Palin's 18-year-old daughter Bristol, who is an unwed mother (no name was used). Letterman also said on his show Wednesday that he would "never, ever make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl." He said he was guilty of poor taste.

No shit, Sherlock! But then again, David Letterman is no paragon of moral virtue himself. He knocked up a woman out of wedlock, but although he took responsibility and has provided support for the child from day one, waited several years before extending the mother the legal protection of marriage. So David Letterman is about as qualified to lecture us on morality as Larry Craig. In other words; zero qualifications.

For her part, when she appeared on the Today show, Governor Palin said Letterman didn't merely owe her an apology. "I would like to see him apologize to young women across the country for contributing to kind of that thread that is throughout our culture that makes it sound like it is OK to talk about young girls in that way, where it's kind of OK, accepted and funny to talk about statutory rape," Palin said. "It's not cool. It's not funny."

Local Alaska reaction posted on the ADN's Alaska Politics blog, including Governor Palin's first statement on June 10th, and June 11th reaction attracting 346 comments. In Alaska Dispatch, Amanda Coyne wants to give Letterman a free pass, claiming a spat between Palin and Letterman will do no one any good.

Actually, it will do about as much good as signing the petition. While the petition won't cause Letterman to get fired, it will provide the voice of opposition. It will let the public know that the corruption of our society by the mass media and the entertainment business will not be taken lightly.
