Pedophilia Hysteria And Vigilante Justice Break Out In Anchorage, Alaska; Lottery Winner Alec Ahsoak Attacked By California Man At Fifth Avenue Mall

The Anchorage Daily News and KTUU Channel 2 report that the man who won the state's first half-million dollar lottery was attacked on a downtown street this afternoon with a tire iron or metal pipe, according to Anchorage police.

Alec Ahsoak was attacked in the 400 block of D Street around 3:30 P.M. Ahsoak told officers he had been stopped by a white man believed to be about 21 and wearing a blue and white checked shirt, blue jeans and a white baseball cap as he entered the 5th Avenue Mall. The man asked Ahsoak if he was the lottery winner, and Ahsoak said he was, then went into the mall. Background on Alec Ahsoak HERE and HERE.

Moments later, as Ahsoak exited, the man attacked him, hitting him on the head with the weapon described as either a metal pipe or tire iron, striking him between eight and 10 times until Ahsoak threw a soda at his attacker and ran to Phyllis' Cafe for help. Ahsoak was then transported to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries, which are serious but not life-threatening; he has since been released. Robbery was not the apparent motive, and police can't yet say for certain whether or not it was a vigilante attack.

Police combed the area for the assailant. Despite numerous witnesses, no one has been able to positively I.D. by assailant by name. In addition, it does not immediately appear that the attack had been caught on any surveillance cameras. However, police have now taken one man and one woman into custody. Although the woman remains unidentified, the man has now been identified as Brandon J. Hughes of Los Angeles, who has been charged with second degree assault and is being held on $90,000 bail. His Alaska Court Record entry is HERE. But in an oddity, Hughes is also charged with being a fugitive from another state due to a warrant he had in California, so he cannot be released on bail..

The executive director of Standing Together Against Rape (STAR) was horrified when she learned of the attack. "Oh my God, I was so afraid something was going to happen to him," said Nancy Haag. "I'm just very sorry to hear that this has happened. ... Nobody deserves to be a victim of any kind of violence, and that's our stand." When asked whether the media should have publicized that Ahsoak was a convicted sex offender, Haag said, "I think it put him, obviously, at greater risk because there are people who like to take justice into their own hands." But conservative talk show host Dan Fagan criticized STAR on The Alaska Standard today for using a lottery, which he describes as a regressive tax on the poor, as a path for financial help when STAR is a self-help organization.

One commenter took KTUU to task for publicizing the information. However, this is misdirected outrage; the media was merely publishing verified official information already available in the public domain.

We need to look in the mirror to determine who to blame. This is what can happen when we as a society delegitimize and dehumanize an entire group of people because we perceive them to be a threat to society merely by their very existence. It has become so blatant that the California Sex Offender Management Board is now urging lawmakers and the governor to reconsider restrictions on where sex offenders can live. They believe that the residency restrictions, passed by voters two years ago in Proposition 83, do not contribute to prevention of new crimes and may harm public safety. Barring sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of areas where children gather has driven many into homelessness -- an unstable situation that can propel them back to crime. They do not advocate relaxing any other restrictions, however.

If we believe that sex offenders pose such a great threat of recidivism, which, according to the Alaska Judicial Center, is over-exaggerated, then the better way is to keep them in prison until they are rehabilitated as much as possible. Turning them loose to live a marginal existence, bagged and tagged like wolves in a game management area, is not the answer.

  1. someone should smack fat mouth dan fagan in the head a few times too just to get him to shut his pie hole for awhile. nobody cares what he thinks but he says it anyway like it matters.
some libtards were allready trying to call this a hate crime because the chester lottery winner is a aknat and the guy who gave him some street justice is white.

  2. Dan Fagan has stirred up a few hornet's nests lately, hasn't he?

The idea that this was a hate crime would be clearly ludicrous. The perp is some unemployed loser from California who thought he could come up here to escape his past.

  3. That pedophile deserved what he got. Any man that would molest a child is a savage and should be treated as such.
