July is bringing with it more recalls by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, some that could lead to fires in your home.
Fire crews say they believe an Anchorage fire last year was caused by candles, one of the reasons state fire officials want to direct you to a very important Web site with a very important warning.
“This item that’s been recalled is called cement candles,” said Mahlon Greene.

Greene is with the Alaska Division of Fire Prevention. He wants consumers to know about a couple of recalls announced today by the Consumer Product Safety Commission including the home fragrance holdings cement candles (shown at left) sold at Pier One Imports up until May.
“They’ve had instances where the candle flares up when the consumer lights them. This isn’t normal for candles so it could cause fire burns or injuries,” said Greene.
But while looking at the recall site, Greene noticed something else. More reasons, not listed in the recall, why this candle is not safe.
“The top is wider than the bottom so it can tip and also the wax could run down on the table top and cause a fire hazard,” Greene said.

Fire related recall number two, the Heat and Glow gas fireplace (shown at left), sold at fireplace dealers and online nationwide through April of this year.
“Heat is building up and there is usually a structural header member in there when they install the fireplace and it’s usually made out of wood and that can actually start smoldering and burn from high heat that’s build up in the upper part of the chimney,” said Greene.

And in the case of any recall, the warning is only as effective as the consumer response.
“It just real important that people follow the procedures that they recommend if they have any of these products that have been recalled instead of continuing to use them,” said Greene.
To make sure an ignored recall doesn’t turn into a real loss. Once again, stop using the product and return it to place of purchase for either a refund or in the case of the fireplace for a repair.
